Keep in mind the simple things too... 1) You may have cooked and ate something that had been sitting around for too long, i.e. meat that had gone bad but you either didn't notice or took the gamble. 2) You may have caught a stomach virus. It is the end of October, and 'tis the season. I'm sitting here with my first cold since this time last year, complete with stuffy nose and sneezing.
  2. You answered this one yourself. The issue is succumbing to cravings. You're going to have to be stronger than this and not give in. Keep repeating what you did when you lost the first 34 pounds, and be patient. If you start to lack patience, then add in some intermittent or extended fasting, or increase your exercise routine. This is a tough one. Technically, you can lose weight on any diet, including an "animal-based" diet with fruit and honey. But by incorporating fruit and honey into your diet, you WILL find yourself hungry more, craving more, and wanting to eat more. Also remember, that while you are actively losing weight, your LDL will go up because some LDL is stored in the adipose tissue, and gets released into the bloodstream as you lose weight. It can take up to 6 months after achieving weight stability (no more weight loss) for your LDL to return to "normal" or "baseline". It's a tricky road to navigate. Nick Norwitz lowered his LDL with oreos. But carnivore doctor Shawn Baker tried to do the same with fruit but didn't have the same result. Lille Kane quit carnivore and her bloodwork actually got worse. Carnivore Ray added fruit and honey to his diet and just didn't feel as good, so now he is back to carnivore most the time and goes on a fruit bender once in a while. How often does your employer get your LDL tested? WHY is it a requirement?
  3. My Cystatin C has gone up slightly from the last time, which unfortunately trends in the wrong direction than what I wanted to see. There's a huge disparity though with my creatine vs cystatin C. Part of this disparity is the protein in the diet, as explained in my video. The other part I think is my fault. When I had the high triglyceride scare, I started taking high dose Niacin and fenofibrate. Fenofibrate is known to increase creatinine levels. But, after several months I started to have major issues with cramps. This issue almost miraculously disappeared overnight when I ran out of Niacin, which I posted about HERE back in the beginning of August. While my initial research said that Niacin is good for lowering trigs and LDL while raising HDL, and being good for the kidneys, now my much deeper research revealed that high dose Niacin in people with late stage renal disease (me) can cause rhabdomyolysis (muscle wasting) and increase the chance of early all-cause mortality (like, holy crap!). I think I was giving myself rhabdomyolysis, as evidenced by the chronic cramping. This muscle wasting and protein breakdown in turn caused my creatinine to go through the roof. On paper, I'm already dead. But I still feel fantastic and symptom free - especially now that I dropped the Niacin. I only struggle with electrolye balance which a little magnesium helps me with.
  4. New York strips these last several nights. Buy them in bulk, then the wife starts to balk at "eating steak again" and I gotta use them up before they go bad. I might have to go Lion Diet for a while anyway. My bloodwork came back and some numbers are not looking good (damn kidney disease be making things tricky for me).

Generally speaking, you should be able to get everything your body requires on a carnivore diet from beef, and then all the moreso if you have some variety, such as seafood, eggs, and the occasional organ meat. I too supplement D3 because I'm in the north and indoors a lot so I don't get a lot of sun, plus my CKD makes me waste a lot of vitamin D as well. Get your vitamin D checked periodically if you are doing high doses. You generally don't want it going over 100 mg/dl or you can get vitamin D toxicity. I would agree with Geoff in that you are probably still experiencing the transition/adaptation phase at week 3, but you're almost out of the thick.
  8. I'm carnivore most days, most meals. But now that I have reach my goals I don't mind if I find myself in a situation where I dip my toes into ketovore or animal-based on rare occasions. I'm past the point of where I would go on a bender for several weeks and struggle to get back on plan if I had an apple. And I'm glad. I hated being a slave to sugar.

  10. Most nights are steak, lol. I'm a creature of habit. Although on Thursday my daughter wanted to go to Chili's. I got the mixed fajitas (chicken, steak, shrimp, and sausage) and made it work. But I would stay away from there, lol. A few "light" dishes might have been keto friendly, but they mostly want to shove breaded fried food and fries on you with every menu item.... cuz it's cheap.

It was even suggested that I have my colon removed surgically. I was told "diet has nothing to do with it" and that I can continue eating anything I want. Now I know that sentence should have continued with "...as long as you keep taking these pills that I'm prescribing to you."   13. I hope so too. I just got some blood work done and my creatinine was checked - and it again looks worse on paper (explained in the video). I'm going to go get a cystatin C next week and hopefully that has remained the same.

  15. Assorted cereal bars, pop tarts, cinnamon rolls, and chocolate chip oatmeal rounds? For lunch? I swear those were breakfast foods when I was a kid, lol. I can't believe I don't see something normal like a sandwhich. To make it seem "healthy" and "balanced", they serve it alongside fresh fruit, raisin box, string cheese, and Zeezee's apple sauce, lol.
  16. Welcome aboard Kevin @Saxguy A lot of good advice above. Give the carnivore diet a good 30, 60, or 90 days. The more the merrier, especially for pain and inflammation and other chronic issues. Then reintroduce single ingredient whole foods. Dr. Berry's "Proper Human Diet" is a spectrum from 0 carb carnivore up to 100g of carbs/day single ingredient low carb vegetables. Dr. Saladino's "Animal-based Diet" is basically meat, fruit (including certain vegetables that are actually fruitage) and honey. Personally, I think most people, after healing and achieving weight loss goals, can marry the two - that is, enjoy fruit as long as you stay under that 100 carbs/day. But for reasons like Geoff @Geezy mentioned above, many people prefer to stay strict carnivore, or at least mostly carnivore (me) because that is where they feel their best.

  18. From the article... "APOE4 carriers maintain higher levels of total and LDL cholesterol at low body mass indices (BMIs). These results suggest that the relationship between APOE4 and lipids may be beneficial for pathogen-driven immune responses and unlikely to increase cardiovascular risk in an active subsistence population." This would be good news for you. Your LDL and Trigs go up in sync with each other. Trigs get carried on VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoprotein), where as Cholesterol gets carried in LDL (Low Desity Lipoprotein). Bascially, VLDL is both trigs and LDL. And then HDL usually has an inverse relationship with trigs. If trigs go up, HDL goes down. If HDL goes up, trigs come down. Lifting heaving things can help raise HDL. Resistance and cardio can help burn triglycerides. If you decide to scale back on saturated fat, maybe add more fatty fish to your diet. The Omega-3's in seafood are supposed to be good for lowering trigs too. And despite was some hardcore carnivore's might say, some [true] olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil is just fine, as none of those are vegetable seed oils.
  19. So clearly this might take some more testing/digging. Remember, that genetic hypertriglyceridemia is also a possibility, but given that yours were within the normal range before, this is not likely in your case. Some see an initial rise, and then it tapers off later. Dr. Ben Bikman explains this in this short video... Mine was basically the long version, lol. Since trigs are basically energy (fat) needing to either be stored as belly fat or for your cells to open the door and let them in to use as fuel, maybe play around with your macros. If you're not fully fat adapted (which can take years per Dr. Cywes) then you may still have gluconeogenesis going on (converting protein to glucose) and your cells still favor it. That's 1:1 gram for gram, which is 30/70 protein to fat (4 calories protein to 9 calories fat, or 4/13 protein and 9/13 fat). Together that's 2580 calories per day. How tall are you? What is your weight? You could hit the same caloric target with 130g of protein and 230g of fat, and this would give you a 20/80 ratio. I know some of the latest "research" says you cannot overeat protein, and that overeating protein doesn't trigger gluconeogenesis, although this was the common thinking in the past. I'm still not so sure. If I eat a couple pounds of lean chicken breast, I will gain weight, vs if I eat a couple pounds of fatty red meat, I won't. You could also try exercising/running to burn off the extra trigs.
  20. Yes, I think you can do resistance training even with CKD stage 3 and still be healthy. The resistance training will do nothing to your kidneys. Here is what WILL happen though.... As you lift heavy weights, you will increase the amount of muscle protein that breaks down. This is how body-building works. You lift heavy weights, which tears your muscles a bit. Then those muscles heal and grow stronger and bigger. The waste product from muscle breakdown is creatinine. Creatinine is also created as a waste product from the protein you eat. Because you have impaired kidney function, it cannot remove the creatinine from your blood through your urine as fast as it used to, so it will build up a bit, and you will see your creatinine numbers rise, which in turn will lower your estimated GFR (eGFR). This might give your doctor the FALSE idea that your kidney function is getting worse, but in reality, they could be just fine - stable, maybe even improving. Because you eat a lot of meat and because you lift a lot of weights, your creatinine levels will be inflated. For people who eat a carnivore diet or do resistance training and have impaired kidney function, another test, call a Cystatin C, is a better way to calculate eGFR, because that's a waste product that is NOT influenced by what you eat or the amount of exercise you do. I've been stage 4 since at least January 2020, and I have been carnivore since May 2023 (1.5 years now).
  21. I had a couple small sirloins last night, about 20oz worth. I've been making them solely on the stovetop in my new cast-iron pan, cooked medium (typical for me). I recently bought some Maldon's salt flakes, the kind Dr. Baker uses, and have been using pretty much just that instead of my usual seasonings and I must say, I am a fan. We downgraded to top sirloin this week because the wife is tired of cutting around the fat on the NY Strips, lol.
  22. I was on LowCarbFriends sometime in the 2000's. I was mostly a lurker, occasional poster. I would mostly hit up the site for recipes. One standout was Cleochatra who made all sorts of recipes and was the one who came up with "Oopsie Rolls". A large number of former LowCarbFriends members went on to create Low Carb Neighborhood, which still exists to this day... https://lcneighborhood.com/forum It's slow going over there, but if you're looking for old friends, you might find some still there. I had created a page to memorialize LowCarbFriends because I was sad to hear it got taken down. Only afterwards did I learn where remnants of that community were hanging out.
  23. Have you been actively losing weight? Your body fat is literally solidified triglyceride. LDL is also stored in the adipose tissue. When you lose weight, all that gets released into your bloodstream. Therefore, as a general rule, it's pointless to look at your lipid profile until about 6 months after weight stabilization, as the numbers will be all over the place. My triglycerides skyrocketed due to Chronic Kidney Disease. It can also skyrocket due to liver and thyroid issues, medications, and genetic hypertriglyceridemia. My most recent video was on my personal struggle with high triglycerides.
  24. Either carnivore made me biphasic, or it was getting a new puppy, lol. But yes, I doze off in my recliner about 11pm or midnight, then I wake up at 3am, let the dog out, maybe shower, and then go to my actual bed and sleep some more from 4am-7:30am. It's every single night. I just kinda accept it as my new normal now, a year and half into it.
