Been outta pocket for a few days so just coming across this.
Cool thread.
So today is starting out early. I was up by 0100 hrs to put a lamb quarter on the smoker.
I’ve calculated this lamb to take 13 hours to get to fall apart tender doneness so it should be ready about 1400 hrs.
My last meal was yesterday around 1230 hrs so by the time I eat today it will have been about 25 hours of fasting.
When that lamb is ready you can bet I’m going to be stuffing myself.

XaqNautilus reacted to Geezy in Dry Aged Beef Trimmings. So today for New Years Eve I’m smoking a prime rib roast.
I dry aged it for two weeks and then trimmed the pellicle off last night so I could season it and get it ready to smoke today.
I was going to give the trimmed off pellicle to my dogs but today I thought I’d see if it was edible so I pan fried some in tallow and it was pretty tasty. A touch of salt and it’s a great meat snack.
Sorry pups but yall are gonna lose out.

XaqNautilus reacted to Carburetor in Sous VideI finally dived in this. My first try came out perfectly the way I hoped, a juicy medium-rare one kilo roast beef.
And every gram is the same tenderness, all around the roast.
After the bath,I quickly seared the roast on a hot cast iron pan in generous amount of bacon grease.
Just one more way to cook great meat - I love cast iron pans, dutch ovens, barbeque etc trad cooking...

XaqNautilus reacted to Carburetor in Hair Loss? This May Be Why.What?

XaqNautilus reacted to Geezy in Hair Loss? This May Be Why.I feel pretty confident that Nick and his colleagues are not influenced by big food or big pharma. If you look at their studies you’ll see that they list no conflicts of interest and they are not funded by any companies.
He also mentioned towards the end that there was more to research on this subject.
Also, as I stated before, this is an issue that tends to crop up in women in the beginning of carnivore. I haven’t heard of any men having this issue.

XaqNautilus reacted to Orweller in Spam & Eggs AKA the SpamletI'd eat the shit out of that.
-
XaqNautilus reacted to Geezy in Spam & Eggs AKA the SpamletYes it’s not ideal but as Dr. Barry says, it’s still better than eating a bunch of carbs. Eat what you can afford to eat.
I used to love fried spam and eggs.

XaqNautilus reacted to Orweller in Spam & Eggs AKA the SpamletUsed to? What is this heresy??

XaqNautilus reacted to Geezy in Spam & Eggs AKA the Spamlet🤣, yeah I still like it but I still want to avoid those hidden sugars.
I still love ice cream but I won’t indulge.

XaqNautilus got a reaction from Orweller in Hair Loss? This May Be Why.I think it's interesting, but warrants more study especially in humans. I find the study suspect because the Big Food has been trying to demonize time-restricted feeding, intermittent or longer versions of fasting. It hurts their bottom line having the unwashed masses choose not to eat at least 6 times per day. I also suspect that if a person eats enough protein then the length of their feeding window matters not.
I've been intermittent fasting for over a year now and my hair is sticking around as thick as ever.

XaqNautilus got a reaction from Geezy in Spam & Eggs AKA the SpamletRecently I spotted Spam on sale for a good price so I picked one up. The ingredients aren't ideal, but it's a cost-effective option and, at least in my humble opinion, it's always good to have some canned meat in the pantry.
It also allows for a very simple and fast meal. You can always add to this simple base, but Spam (at least if you like the taste of Spam which I do) does a great job of carrying the dish on its own. You can substitute your preferred luncheon meat or corned beef if you desire.
Ingredients:
1 340g can Spam
6 eggs
1-2 tbsp fat for frying
Method:
1. Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Add 1-2 tbsp of ghee or your favorite fat or oil.
2. As the pan heats up uncan the Spam and cut into slices. Put Spam slices in pan to fry. Adjust heat if needed, I usually lower my burner to low (3) here.
3. Crack eggs into a bowl, add any additional seasoning you'd like to the eggs and beat.
4. Fry the Spam to your desired doneness and then use a spatula, spoon or a burger meat chopper to break up the Spam into smaller pieces.
5. Add scrambled eggs. Adjust head if needed, I usually lower mine to 2 here so I can leave it unattended for 5 minutes.
6. Flip and leave whole for a frittata style meal or break up into a scramble.
In this picture I only added a little bit of fresh ground black pepper to the eggs.
With my newly rediscovered love for the taste of Spam I'll probably eat this in some form once per week.

XaqNautilus got a reaction from Orweller in CICOWhile I do love Bart Kay and his debunks are amazing, he hasn't yet sold me on disregarding energy deficits for weight loss. Bart Kay and Dr. Chaffee both preach the same wisdom that you should just eat fatty red meat until you're either full or the food stops tasting good and to eat when hungry. This approach doesn't work for me. I've been stuck on my plateau for a year now, I know I need an energy deficit (some would call it a calorie deficit) in order to lose weight.
I agree with Bart that the calorie is a horrible unit of measurement due to us not "burning" calories like a bomb calorimeter does but he doesn't offer up a better alternative to use as a measurement. It's like Bart hates measurement as he has stated in the past that he makes it a mandatory condition that his nutrition/fitness clients NOT measure or track their weight and if he catches them doing that then he stops serving that client. If we are not to use the calorie, then what are we to use Bart? Yes, I know we shouldn't need to measure, but if we want to measure we should be able to. The calorie is a flawed unit but not an entirely useless unit, it does at least give us something to measure by and make educated guesses from and unfortunately it's what we have until someone comes up with a more accurate unit. When that better unit does come along I expect we'll be able to use a very simple conversion formula (or 3) to convert a calorie to the new unit(s) (perhaps protories, carbories and fatories). We can still use the calorie especially when we know that calories from carbs, fat or protein are not the same and that just counting calories is insufficient. However, it's commonly stated that one needs a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories to lose a lb of body weight, which I don't believe is that many calories while being low carb based on personal experience. Also from personal experience working in industrial processes, an imperfect measurement is better than no measurement at all.
I really wish Bart actually walked the walk instead of just talking a very good but very abrasive talk. He preaches that we should only need to eat ruminant muscle meat and only need to resistance train 3 times a week for less than an hour each session and be fit/have muscles then why is he a string bean? If it truly is that easy he should be able to show us how it's done with his own body or at least with client success stories.

Excellent!

And he was definitely on to something.
This jives with the claim that humans are hypercarnivores, meaning that we get more than 70% of our diet from meat.

XaqNautilus got a reaction from ol_hilly in Dr. James H. Salisbury - Early Advocate for Meat ConsumptionI don't know how many times I've eaten a dish called "Salisbury Steak" but I never knew the story until today. Some consider the Salisbury Steak the first fad diet.
I always thought Salisbury was a chef, not a doctor. Turns out he was a civil war doctor and early experimenter and promoter of using diet for health and longevity. He claimed our teeth are "meat teeth" and our digestive systems designed to digest lean meat, and that vegetables, fats, starches and fruit should only be 1/3 of our diet. (Oddly the video only says fruits and vegetables)
The entire video is very good but if pressed for time skip tp 8:01 for the most salient part.

XaqNautilus got a reaction from Bob in Let's get ripped (buy his stuff)VShred is a typical mainstream diet. Doesn't seem to be any different from the standard western diet aside from calorie restriction. Kind of surprised it got targeted for a hit piece.
The writer of the article is a dietician. Dieticians aren't allowed to recommend anything other than the national food guidelines or they risk losing their license.
Men's Health is garbage. It has been for decades. It's a vessel to sell "health" products and other crap to men, not actually get men healthy by giving good advice.
So we have a garbage article about a garbage diet by a garbage writer in a garbage magazine.
