Keto & carnivore have sure helped my kidney function. I have polycystic kidney disease, so there are other factors at play I work to mitigate. I follow a higher fat version, trying to keep ketones in line. I believe that is healthy for just about anyone. I also practice some intermittent fasting, but some of that is to slow down the cyst growth (not activate insulin or mTor all the time).

My nephrologist seems slightly surprised by my lack of decline, as of late. She attributes the lower kidney measurements to measurement error, which is possible. I mentioned keto a few years ago when she noticed the ketones in my urine results. She just said huh, I think they did a weight loss challenge with that in the office previously. Does not seem to have any knowledge of nutritional therapies. She did agree to test cystatin C this year, because I explained it is more accurate for those who eat a lot of meat.

So yes, generally speaking, Dr. Hampton is spot on.

There are a couple caveats in my particular case though. I am fairly convinced my kidney disease is a result of organ damage from pharmaceuticals. If it were from hyperinsulinemia, then I think I would have seen much better recovery often experienced by other carnivores who suffered from diabetic kidney disease and got to enjoy some reversal. My eGFR (via creatinine) has not gone up. In fact, it has "got worse" because I consume more protein that I did before, therefore producing more creatinine, and therefore throwing off the numbers. But if you look at my Cystatin C and some other markers, there have been minor improvements.

The jury is still out on whether it's necessary to limit protein in stages 4/5 prior to dialysis. My theory is that it doesn't matter, that this is a modern medical myth, and I am willing to gamble with my own health by continuing to enjoy a staple of steak and eggs.
