Good morning, y'all. 🙂

I've been on the low carb/ultra low carb train before and have gotten good results in the past at bringing my blood sugar under control. Sooner or later I've fallen off the train. And been run over on the tracks. But here I am, back again. 🙄

Full disclosure: I will not be doing strictly 100% carnivore, but I came to this board because eating plenty of meat (and only a smidgen of dairy) is the foolproof way to bring my blood sugar down. And to lose weight. Those two things go hand in hand, although even if/when I lose 20-ish pounds, I will always have to watch carbs closely. (Mostly WATCH, as in stare longingly at without touching...).

I'll be 77 a week from today and it's now or never. (Hmmm...how many times have I said "It's now or never" in the past? I don't have enough fingers to total that up.) I live in a senior retirement community (totally independent living) where meals are provided, but I have a full kitchen and cook mostly for myself. I like to cook, but frankly, I'm not looking forward to beef, pork, chicken, eggs, bacon, etc., all the time and forever. Some video that I watched said that if hamburger or a pork chop or some meat thing doesn't appeal, then you aren't hungry enough. I think waiting until I am seriously hungry will help. I have been guilty of just grazing and looking for something to eat (even a low carb snack) out of boredom and idleness.

I became mesmerized by YouTube videos on the carnivore diet, especially the "steakandbuttergal." Is she for real? Watching her put several steaks and chickens into that slender figure is mind-blowing. I do believe she has straightened out her health with a carnivore diet. I also have skin problems and G.I. issues, not to mention the stuff that happens when you get...well... old.

For the last week I've eaten only meat and eggs, and my blood sugar has gone from almost 200 most of the time to under 120 most of the time. This exactly tallies with my experience with ultra low carb eating in the past. (I haven't done an a1c test, because that is not revealing for three months.)

People who say low-carb is fad or some kind of cult craze just need to get a glucometer and find out for themselves.

That's a little sketch. Hoping to find inspiration in this community, especially from others who live alone and plan their own meals.

Best,

Eve

Welcome Eve and welcome back to eating right again. Starting over again shows that you are no quitter. You now have the experience and wisdom to know where you are weak and can learn from it. Like most of us its sounds like you are a carb addict. The problem with being addicted to anything is that it’s extremely difficult to moderate what you are addicted to and in my case I’ve found that it’s easier to just completely abstain from what I’m addicted to.

I hope you find the support you need here and are successful in your goals. Remember, nothing tastes as good as how you feel.

Welcome. And welcome back to eating what I see as properly.

It should be a bit easier this go around because you know the positive results out there. A first timer has to wonder in all the hooplah just a ploy to get you to buy something or watch something for the clicks.

I am strict carnivore, or so they say. Meat, salt and water and quite a bit of butter. This has worked really well for me.

Good luck as you continue. And again, welcome.

I'm the guiltiest but carnivore is automatically associated with weight loss and tons of people (like me) see it as another weight loss hack.

If the lead off was the health benefits that come from carnivore and not just health benefits from just losing weight, but carnivore itself, it would move even faster into the mainstream.

I still find myself leading off with "I'm on carnivore and lost........" when I should be talking about "I'm on carnivore and I have not taken medicine for NMO/SD for pain and inflammation since June of 24. My blood sugar is around 80 every day and my energy levels are constant throughout the day even as the work load increases, the ability to continue remains".

But, it is the weight loss that rings the loudest.

Hi Eve,

This forum is my first attempt to get feedback on my journey. I tend to be independent in my routine and do not share much with anyone. For the most part I am usually successful in my endeavors but since my hypothyroidism diagnosis I have not received any significant recommendation for the 100 pounds I put on my body before my medication dose became adequate. My blood levels took 3 years before returning to normal and I resented to fact I was told by Medical professionals that I would need life long medication for my metabolic state. My obesity lead to my other complications and as you said “old age” was a challenge. I am 66 years old. I have tried most everything in existence to become healthy but have failed until I went on the carnivore diet January of 2025. It took many months before it saw results as I had put my body through so much. After 6 months I finally saw some slow move on the scale. There were some “non-scale accomplishments” after about 5 months. So now I am convinced that for myself carnivore is the answer. I went low carb for 10 years. I saw results but could not maintain the success. Upon embarking on the carnivore diet the thing that convinced me was I had no hungry pains or urges so it was easy to stay strict with the beef butter bacon eggs and chicken and seafood. Recently, I suddenly ate some chocolate and fudge. Just before I fell off the wagon I had fantasies about eating things non carnivore. I even had dreams about eating something by accident and woke up very upset about the dream. This was followed by some cooking videos of holiday recipes and I told myself I would try and cook for the holidays but take the non carnivore foods to my grandchildren. This led to my first cheat ever and continued to nibble on chocolate, dates and nuts for 1 week now. It’s usually in the later part of my day. I decide to stop this as soon as possible but I felt as though I needed to confess to someone out there. I can relate to your story as we are both in the near age range to each other. I need some acknowledgement from anyone who can hear me. Has anyone fallen and then got back on track???

Absolutely, in fact I’d say most have. It’s really not a big deal. You just need to start where you are at. Don’t beat yourself up over it but use it as a learning tool. It can actually be a good thing as it teaches you to recognize where you are weak so that you can avoid that next time.

I believe it’s more of a mindset as anything. Get your priorities straight as to what you really want and be determined to achieve your goals. Nothing can stand in your way if your mind is right.

Forget the mistake but remember the lesson.

Pammy, your story is moving and inspiring! I think most things in life are a start-stop-backup-go forward-stop, etc. process. Hardly anything is straight up the hill with no pauses or detours. Sounds to me like you're doing fabulous. All you can do is start every day from where you are.

I've only been doing this for a couple of weeks and already I can barely look at a piece of meat. But the excellent results I'm seeing on my glucometer are blowing me away! So that is what I'm keeping my eye on.
