Less meat, more plants: top US heart body’s diet advice at odds with MahaAmerican Heart Association bucks Trump administration line to suggest prioritizing plant-based protein over meat In contrast to the federal government’s recommendation of use of beef tallow and consumption of red meat, the AHA pushed for plant-based proteins such as legumes, nuts and seeds. Photograph: Allen J Schaben/Los Angeles Times/Getty Images The American Heart Association’s new nutrition guidance, released on Tuesday, emphasizes a dietary pattern rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, prioritizing plant-based protein over meat. It also suggests limiting the use of sugar, salt and ultra-processed foods and replacing full fat dairy with non-fat and low-fat dairy. Donald Trump earlier this year announced a new slate of dietary guidelines that recommended Americans eat more protein from both animal and plant sources, and encouraged the consumption of full-fat dairy. In contrast to the federal government’s recommendation of use of beef tallow and consumption of red meat, the AHA is pushing for plant-based proteins such as legumes, nuts and seeds, choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy, and, when consuming red meat, selecting lean cuts, avoiding processed forms and keeping portions small. The Trump administration and health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s push to “Make America healthy again” has focused on the removal of synthetic dyes, other chemical ingredients, ultra-processed foods, consumption of less sugar and seed oils. The AHA also suggests Americans choose sources of unsaturated fats, avoid ultraprocessed foods and minimize intake of added sugars in beverages and foods. The organization recommended Americans to prepare foods with minimal or no salt, and limit the intake of alcohol. The guidance also recommended children can and should begin following a heart-healthy dietary pattern starting at one year old. The AHA’s guidance was aligned with the US Food and Drug Administration’s dietary guidelines on major issues, a spokesperson from the FDA said, adding they looked forward to working collaboratively with AHA. The AHA, which is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, releases dietary guidance about every five years to promote cardiovascular health. Hi everyone
I'm new here so my apologies in case I'm not doing this right. This is going to be a long one. I have a problem, a crisis actually, and I was hoping I could get some help here. So about 3 years ago I went off birth control pills (I was on them for 6 years) which destroyed my hormones. I started getting cystic acne like I'd never experienced before. The scars are still there and they're so bad that I've been getting laser treatment. It was horrific. I started missing my cycles. Extreme mood swings and uncontrollable weight gain. My hair fell out in clumps (still haven't recovered after 3 years). I looked for a solution. I already knew about Dr. Lustig's work on sugar but even cutting out sugar didn't help much. That's when I stumbled on Dr. Ken Berry's content. He talked about keto so that's what I tried and the results were ok but not enough to fix me. He also talked about carnivore so I tried it. It worked like magic. 3 months in and my acne was reduced and my weight started going down. I was on the lion diet for 2 years. Everything but my hair fall was fixed. Then something happened in my life that threw me off balance a bit and I had one bite of cake. One small bite and then all hell broke loose on me. In a matter of weeks I developed bulimia. Binging and purging. And one year later, right now, I've been trying to get back on carnivore without success. The binge continues but I had to stop the purge due to recurring blood in my vomit (pardon the graphic description), and fasting and exercise just make me binge even worse. I didn't have this problem before. I have severe meat aversion. I can't stand it even though before, it used to be my favorite food in the world. I've tried fasting, going cold turkey, keto to ketovore to carnivore, all without success. I'm at the end of my rope. I've put on 20 kg and my acne is coming back. Does anyone have a similar experience? Meat aversion is my main problem. I just can't stand red meat anymore or eggs or anything. I just want to get back on carnivore but I don't understand why I cannot. My apologies for the super long post and thank you for reading.
