Today I went on a date with a dermatologist. She said beef tallow is a big no for the skin. Sometimes people get infected or blemished skin from it being applied to skin

Then I asked about MCT oil, thinking that might impress her of my skin care knowledge, and she said regular coconut oil is better for killing microbes. That surprised me

she shot down tea tree oil too, saying it’s just sort of harsh on the skin

Lol If I can only find a woman who’s main hobbies are being a Foodie and International Traveler

I used to enjoy traveling until seeing thousands of dating profiles almost all of which they are Foods and all their photos are from international vacations

pray for me

I’ve looked up Boca toothpaste and it looks expensive.

You are correct, sir. About $12 a tube. But definitely a more natural tooth paste than anything with fluoride.

Listerine original formula

Listerine is not as good as many think it is. Killing ALL bacteria in your mouth is just not a good idea. It disrupts the oral microbiome tremendously. Also some mouth washes are acidic enough to increase the chance of cavities. Again, mouth health is directly connected to gut health. I've stopped using it all together. And I've used Listerine for 3 decades.

Boca may be expensive, but the crown I had placed could've bought me a lifetime of tooth paste. We always need to ask, compared to what?

what all natural alternatives are there to buying store bought toothpaste?

Remember that nano-hydroxyapatite can be found normally in the mouth, fluoride however, is not. So I consider a toothpaste like Boca a holistic approach -compared to- other toothpastes.

Belongs in the trash in my humble opinion. Again, stuff I used for decades.

no kidding i heard of brushing your teeth with bar soap.  I tried it and my teeth felt real clean,  but you have to not swallow it. I only did it once.

I have some powdered Aztec mud which is supposedly good for the skin. Well a few months ago I was having the same tug of war about finding a replacement for lab made toothpaste

I took a half teaspoon of the mud and a half teaspoon of water mixed. Brushed my teeth with it!

it seemed surprisingly good on the teeth. It really did. But I stopped using it and went back to Crest. I forget why

A few years ago I read several articles about folks that had cleaned up their diet and no longer needed deodorant.
I scoffed.

About 2 years ago I read a different article about folks that no longer used shampoo on their hair.
I scoffed.

Last year, I read a different article about people discontinuing use of toothpaste who were on the carnivore diet.  It was at that point that I actually began contemplating the possibilities.

I since have found out that if you do not "strip" the oils out of your hair with shampoo constantly, your scalp produces much less oil, and things settle down. I havent personally used shampoo in the last year, and no complaints from anyone.   I also simply scrub my fingers through my hair under the shower and call it good.  I feel better, my hair LOOKS better, and when I run a comb through it wet and let it dry, it will stay put for the most part without any product in it.  More win.

My wife and I were using Tom's of Maine toothpaste, which I always enjoyed, and was about the only brand we could find that was made without the needless flouride, but we have kicked that to the curb in favor of our make-your-own "homesteader" variety which is just baking soda in some coconut oil with a few drops of peppermint thrown in.  It works fang-tastic, and is actually reducing the plaque on the back of my lower front teeth!  Dont think Ill be going back to the Tom's.

To be completely truthful, we DID both quit using deodorant (as a test) for about two weeks, and were pleasantly surprised that we could get away with it by just regular daily washing.  There was a small amount of natural odor on days that we had worked really hard, but not overpowering.  We now have begun making our own deodorant (which we LOVE!) Its just baking soda, shea butter, arrowroot powder, a small amount of beeswax as a binder, and we like some almond oil in there too.  I can post the recipe if anyone is interested.

That is what I do as well. I started to just wash my hair just once a week but now I’m going two weeks. My hair is doing great. Never looks oily and looks good.

That’s what I’m using now. I ran out last week and so I used some of my old toothpaste and it was horrible and burned.

I have forgotten deodorant a couple of times and I’ve been really surprised that I didn’t smell like a goat so I experimented for three days am I could detect a little odor but not much. I don’t use a chemical laden deodorant but instead a natural deodorant and it works well for me.

I haven't used shampoo in years! Of course, because it's no longer needed 😆

Deodorant is a sometimes for me.

And I concur, on carnivore, your teeth are in a much better shape.

Isn't coconut oil solid at room temp?

Yes, but it's not a hard solid.  At room temp it's quite pliable.

I have never tried the simple recipe with olive oil, but I would assume it would make a bit of a "soup" rather than a paste.

My bathroom stays at about 70F, and at that temp the coconut oil is just barely firmed up.   A few times when I have been surprised by a warm day and the woodstove has been stoked full for sub zero weather, I will come home to 85 or 90 degrees indoors, which makes the coconut oil liquid and the baking soda all falls to the bottom of the mixture.  When I make a new batch of toothpaste, I pour it into one of those 1/4 pint jelly jars where I can dip the toothbrush in the jar and grab some paste.

Body heat turns the coconut oil to a complete liquid in seconds anyway, so I really dont see why olive oil would not work, provided you dont mind shaking the jar before each use to get the baking soda mixed back in.

would olive oil work just as well?

Probably better used on the outside of the body than the inside.

    • Today is February 1st and marks the first day of "National Fasting February" - and yes, this is a thing. Google it!

For this month's challenge, we are going to support each other in our efforts to practice various forms of fasting throughout the month. The type of fasting you wish to do is entirely up to you. We are going to encourage INTERMITTENT FASTING, that is to put it simply, skipping a meal so that you are only eating 2 meals a day instead of the traditional 3 meals a day. The goal is to enjoy these meals within an 8 hour "feasting window" and then no food in the remaining 16 hours "fasting window" (in which 8 of those hours you should be sleeping).

An example is waking up at 7am, but waiting until 11am-noon for your first meal, and then having dinner at 6-7pm for your 2nd meal. Other people prefer to eat a breakfast, then a mid-day lunch, and skip dinner.

If you want to throw in a 24, 48, or 72 hour fast just to show off by all mean do so, lol.

Just like before, we encourage you to check in daily, and share what you have eaten, perhaps a weigh-in if you're willing, and enjoy in some small talk. Every Reply in this topic will count as an entry for this month's prize drawing. Attending Monday night zoom also counts as a bonus entry. Back-to-back posts count as 1 entry as a counter to spamming.

Let's keep our resolutions going strong!
