Hi all. I'm new here and somewhat new to carnivore. I've been experimenting with carnivore since early November after a few months on keto, with the hope of identifying and addressing ten years of worsening health problems (gastro, joint, skin, bowel, histamine problems, can't eat carbs without what looked like hypoglycemia even before keto, other weird malfunctions, etc). Currently looking like autoimmune or allergy-related but I am waiting on yet another specialist appointment.

I can't take any form of magnesium pills as they give me stomach pain, but I have had success in holding off leg cramps by eating 30-40g of hemp hearts per day. I have also been having decent luck in reducing joint pain, tendonitis and some other factors by eating carnivore so far, though it's early days. I really notice that bringing back in any vegetables really gives me a flare up of various symptoms, though, so I'm sticking with it when and where I can.

My question: obviously hemp hearts are a seed and will likely be limiting the benefits of carnivore, but there's not a lot of organ meat out there that will give me an equivalent 200-300mg of magnesium in a form that doesn't make my stomach do flips. Is it worth sticking with hemp hearts or is there a solution I'm not seeing? Where are you guys getting magnesium from, if you find you need it?

Interesting. I had to look up hemp hearts. I can see why they help with leg cramps. The magnesium content is pretty rich. Here's what's in 30g of hemp hearts...

  • Calories: 166
  • Fat: 14.6g
  • Carbohydrates: 2.6g
  • Fiber: 1.2g
  • Sugars: 0.5g
  • Protein: 9.5g
  • Magnesium: 210 mg
  • Potassium: 360 mg

To get that much from beef you would need to eat at least 2.5 pounds of muscle meat, and liver doesn't really have that much more. This is why people like Dr. Shawn Baker and Dr. Anthony Chaffee don't need to supplement because they easily eat 3+ pounds of beef per day. I'm about half that, so I need to supplement.

Maybe. Maybe not. I would be interested in knowing which plant defense chemicals are in it. And then, do those compounds in those quantities effect you?

So I am currently using Zentastic 4-in-1 Magnesium complex. It has Magnesium Glycinate, Malate, Taurate, and Lactate.  I've chosen this because these 4 forms of magnesium help with cramps, the heart, metabolism, and don't cause loose stools.

Many keto-carnivores like an electrolyte drink mix called LMNT which has magnesium, sodium, chloride, and potassium in it.

Others like Keto Chow Daily Minerals. One serving has 400mg of magnesium which is plenty. It taste like donkey though so you have to split the serving and hide in in other drinks throughout the day, lol.

Wonderful! I hope you keep seeing improvements!

This is the magnesium complex I’m currently taking.

I also drink an LMNT every day.

If you are having stomach issues and new to carnivore try to give the diet time to straighten out your gut biome.
I had IBS for over thirty years and had recently developed Crohn’s disease that was debilitatingly painful but after 30 days on carnivore I was completely cured.
Your mileage may vary but give it a shot. It’s a healing diet after all.

    • "Marching into March with Much Motivation"

For this months challenge, we are going to support each other in our efforts to get up and move. Spring is in the air. The weather is getting better. Get out there and MOVE! Go for walks, hike some trails if they aren't too muddy. Or just make a goal to get on the treadmill or lift some weights more than usual throughout the month. Get in the habit now, and we just might have beach bodies when summer officially hits, lol.

Just like before, we encourage you to check in daily, and share what you have eaten, perhaps a weigh-in if you're willing, and enjoy in some small talk.

The March drawing will be for a 4-pack of Carnivore Bars!

    • Today is February 1st and marks the first day of "National Fasting February" - and yes, this is a thing. Google it!

For this month's challenge, we are going to support each other in our efforts to practice various forms of fasting throughout the month. The type of fasting you wish to do is entirely up to you. We are going to encourage INTERMITTENT FASTING, that is to put it simply, skipping a meal so that you are only eating 2 meals a day instead of the traditional 3 meals a day. The goal is to enjoy these meals within an 8 hour "feasting window" and then no food in the remaining 16 hours "fasting window" (in which 8 of those hours you should be sleeping).

An example is waking up at 7am, but waiting until 11am-noon for your first meal, and then having dinner at 6-7pm for your 2nd meal. Other people prefer to eat a breakfast, then a mid-day lunch, and skip dinner.

If you want to throw in a 24, 48, or 72 hour fast just to show off by all mean do so, lol.
