What Did You Eat Today?
Bob replied to Geezy's topic in Carnivore, Ketovore, Keto, & Low-Carb Support
I remember those. Quite tasty, lol. While I avoid beer 99.9% of the time now (I've had maybe 3 in the last 12 months). I still have some bourbon once a month at Open Mic night, or perhaps some hard liquor with no carbs added to a Diet Sprite or Diet Coke. I've got a lot of bottles of this or that here and home collecting dust, and I even think some of it is going bad.- 1,641 replies

Sounds like you are the right track. Dr. Berry says to eat BBBE (beef, butter, bacon, and eggs) and Dr. Kiltz will say to eat BEBBIS (beef, eggs, bacon, butter, ice cream*, and salt). *homemade ice cream thats just cream and egg yolks, no sugar. Some people don't do well with dairy. Most people are fine with it and odds are so are you, but that would be the next thing to nix in your personal N=1 experiment. If you are based in the USA and there is a Labcorp near you, you can get cheap bloodwork at www.OwnYourLabs.com and check your inflammation markers. Totally unnecessary but I like to geek out on that stuff, lol.

Hunger is different
Bob replied to Mleedilley's topic in Carnivore, Ketovore, Keto, & Low-Carb Support
When I get hungry on carnivore, it's basically an empty feeling and I know I want to eat. When I would get "hungry" on carbs, I would be starving, ravenous, and nauseous, and felt like I was going to drop dead of starvation if I didn't eat something soon. -

Yes indeed. I have to take electrolytes at bedtime so as not to have cramps. I really struggle to balance my minerals due to my CKD. -
Also remember that when you are actively losing weight, your LDL will go up. There is cholesterol in your adipose tissue that gets released into the blood stream as you use that stored fat for energy. When you are eating a ketogenic diet, you are relying on fat for energy. LDL is what transports that fat to your cells. I would be wary of a lipid panel until you had at least 90 days of being weight-stable. And 180 would probably be better.

Do not give in. Do not give up! Last night I had friend bologna sandwhiches on Egg Life wraps with some Primal Kitchen mayo and a few banana peppers - which to me, count as a seasoning- 1,641 replies

If you're approach to eating is keto, then you might be able to make room for a little nut butter here and there. Some causes for concern would be the sugar content, and if it's made with any seed oils. Nuts are seeds, and seeds tend to be high in plant defense chemicals that may, or may not, fuel underlying health conditions. So it depends on what your health goals are? Are you trying to lose weight, reverse disease, or just trying to eat more whole foods and less processed foods? Right now in my journey, I am mostly carnivore (with spices) most days, and will rarely, but occasionally, eat a piece of fruit or a vegetable that is actually the fruitage of a plant. I still live under my mantra of refusing to eat roots, stems, seeds, and leaves.

. I have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease and have been eating a Carnivore Diet for over a year now. Am I killing my kidneys with all that protein, or am I healing them? Modern medicine teaches that protein is hard on the kidneys, especially for those with CKD, so am I taking a big risk here? Can a person with CKD eat a Carnivore Diet or meat-heavy carnivore-centric keto diet? Should those with healthy kidneys eat low protein and avoid red meat in order to protect their kidney function? This is 303.56 mg/dl for us USA folks The general consensus in the keto-carnivore community is No. If you are eating a Proper Human Diet (i.e. carnivore, keto, ketovore, maybe a delicate step towards animal-bases), and all your other numbers are looking good, then LDL is not a number of concern. Mine went up. As I lost weight it skyrocketed into the 500's but now that I have been weight-stable for the last 8 months it has dropped back into the 200's.

Hello everyone! New here. Terrible Anxiety
Bob replied to jarrodssc's topic in Greetings and Introductions
Some people report not needing as much sleep as they used to. And then others, like myself, have become biphasic - that is, sleep in 2 stages instead of one long 8 hour rest. I sleep from around 11pm or midnight to 2 or 3am, then I get up for an hour, and then I go back to sleep again and then wake up at 7am or so. It's been like this since shortly after starting carnivore and it has never gone away. I don't let it bother me though. I've just accepted it. Try not to eat within 4 hours of bedtime. If I eat late, I can't sleep. My body wants to expend that energy. Aim for at least 1g of fat for every 1g of protein. I'm glad to hear that. This proves that this is good for you overall. What kind of carbs? If you mean sugar and grain and the standard western diet, then yeah, you'll feel awful. But, if you can stay mostly carnivore and then occasionally eat ketovore or animal-based (i.e. fruit) you should still feel alright, provided you're just getting a small amount of carbs here and there and not binging on fruit all day, lol. -

I've been a good boy all week. Eggs and/or sausage in the morning. Beef patties or New York strips for my dinners. I buy in bulk (Sam's Club) so I do a lot of repetitive eating so nothing goes bad.- 1,641 replies

Listen, here you are the newbie. We don't know you, nor do we know what advice others have given you over the years. Repeating advice is bound to happen, especially when said advice proves to be beneficial for most people who apply it. We're sorry if it's not working for you, assuming that you are actually honestly applying it. Please understand that we want to help you, and we hope to see you succeed. Telling another member who is demonstrating concern for you to "take a hike" is unwarranted. Welcome aboard Emmerson! It sounds like you are moving in the right direction. Since you have some weight to lose and some healing you are hoping to accomplish, I would defintely focus on being keto, ketovore, or carnivore. Keto = less than 20 actual carbs per day. (Half your plate fatty meat, the other half low carb veggies). Ketovore = less than 10 actual carbs per day. (3/4 plate fatty meat, 1/4 plate low carb veg). Carnivore = trace carbs (still a little carbs in meat, eggs, etc), nearly zero carb. Animal products only. You will want to cut out the fruit and probably milk as well, as the fruit is full of fructose (sugar) and the milk will have lactose (sugar) which are carbs. You might be able to reintroduce these at a later time. You can by all means gradually wean yourself off of them as you work your way to carnivore. But just know that until you've given them up completely for a period of time, they might still play games with your cravings.

Welcome Darcy. That's my aunt's name We're a pretty friendly group here. We haven't been overrun by the overly dogmatic folks yet, lol. By definition, a "carnivore" is an organism that eats mostly meat. Hypercarnivores consume 70% or more of their diet from meat (all Obligate carnivores such as cats are Hyercarnvores). Bart Kay would say humans are hypercarnivores. Mesocarnivores (such as a fox) consume at least 50% meat, and Hypocarnivores (such as a bear) consume 30% or less meat. The latter are also considered Omnivores. I basically believe in a "carnivore-centric" diet that is all-natural. I'm strict carnivore most of the time, but if I'm gonna "cheat", I'm going to cheat with something keto, such as some salsa, a cucumber or pickle, or in about another week, the low hanging tiny little apples in the apple trees in my back yard. Depending on one's personal physiology and current health conditions, I'll recommend anything from a strict Lion Diet to a bizarre marriage of Ken Berry's Proper Human Diet and Paul Saladino's Animal-Based diet (which I think is TOO HIGH in carbs, which is why I use the term "carnivore-centric").

so... when do benefits appear?
Bob replied to johnnypepperoni's topic in Carnivore, Ketovore, Keto, & Low-Carb Support
It's true that ketogenic diets, including a strict carnivore or Lion Diet, and seemingly feel "miraculous" to certain individuals who struggled with health, well-being, and weight management all their lives and when they finally stumbled on this, by golly it worked. But at the same time there are still thousands of people who have not been able to come off their meds completely. Perhaps they could only reduce their dosage. Perhaps nothing changed at all. For example, while I have reversed about half a dozen of my chronic conditions, I still have stage 4 chronic kidney disease. I'm jealous of the testimonies of those who have reversed their kidney disease, but I am starting to come to the realization that I am not going to be one of them. Regardless, I've experienced enough benefits to stick with this a carnivore-centric (not even necessarily strict carnivore) for life. If your issues can be traced back to being born prematurely, then is diet really going to fix it? It might help. It might not. Like @Orweller said, sometimes the cause of mental issues stems from other issues. My daughter suffers from depression that comes along in conjunction with PTSD. She can eat a proper human diet, but it doesn't erase the trauma. It may only help her deal with it. I had mental and emotional instability problems myself. I didn't observe any specific turning point. Over time, it just dawned on me that I had been mentally and emotionally stable for a several months, which was unusual. Now I am aware of the improvement, but it was in retrospect. If you have been on medication, I wouldn't not stop taking it cold turkey. Stick with this plan for 90 or 120 days to give your body plenty of time to adjust. Maybe you will find yourself in the enviable position of gradually lowering your dose and weaning yourself off the meds. And of course, maybe not. Some people don't do well with dairy. Some people can't do egg whites. Some people need to supplement electrolytes. Have you had your vitamin D checked? -

Anyone Know Any Benefits From Cured Meats?
Bob replied to Keith O's topic in Carnivore, Ketovore, Keto, & Low-Carb Support
There's very little difference between the three. Not enough for me to worry about. The nutrients in meat, such as protein and minerals, are pretty resistant to heat. If you cook meat in liquid (as in a stew or soup), some of the minerals and protein may leach from the meat into the cooking liquid. But if you consume the broth, little will be lost. -

Nice. Thanks for sharing. I had heard of SeedOilScout before, but not the LocalFats one. -
I haven't seen the movie, but I remember when I was a kid this was a problem. Most plastics weren't "microwave safe" nor even "dishwasher safe". But then microwave/dishwasher safe plastics started hitting the market. I think many of us took that for granted until recently as microplastics are becoming a hot news item. I know I no longer microwave anything in plastic. I went out and got a bunch of glass storage containers instead.

What Did You Eat Today?
Bob replied to Geezy's topic in Carnivore, Ketovore, Keto, & Low-Carb Support
Forgive me Atkins for I hath sinned, lol. I had a beer yesterday. And the night before I went to the Kent Heritage Festival here in Kent, Ohio and I saw a gyro vendor. I explained my diet to them and they agreed to give me a plate of extra meat (for an extra price) with no pita bread. I still had the tzatziki sauce and a few diced tomatoes on it. I believe gyro loaf, even the big log that rotates on a spit, actually has some breading in it. Between the gyro Saturday and the can of beer Sunday, I am up from 177 to 180. Whenever I see 180 this is what goes on in my head, lol....- 1,641 replies

Two men lived on an exclusive meat diet for 1 year and a third man for 10 days. The relative amounts of lean and fat, meat ingested were left to the instinctive choice of the individuals. At the end of the year, the subjects were mentally alert, physically active, and showed no specific physical changes in any system of the body. Vitamin deficiencies did not appear. Kidney function tests revealed no evidence of kidney damage. In these trained subjects, the clinical observations and laboratory studies gave no evidence that any ill effects had occurred from the prolonged use of the exclusive meat diet.-
