Eye-opening study into ultra-processed foods and your risk of heart problemsMichelle Basch | *****@*****.tld March 28, 2026, 5:39 AM A report from the American College of Cardiology found people who eat more than nine servings of ultra-processed food a day are an average of 67% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, or die from heart disease than people who eat one serving a day. The study also found that with each daily serving, the risk of such an event goes up by more than 5%. Among Black Americans, each additional serving leads to an increase in risk of more than 6%. Dr. Michele Arthurs, a lifestyle medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente, told WTOP that if you’re not sure what you’re eating is ultra-processed, just look at the label. “You can see a long list of ingredients, many of which you may not be able to pronounce because they are additives or chemicals that are used for food preservation to increase shelf life,” she said. These kinds of foods also tend to be loaded with sugar, salt and saturated fat. “Our body, essentially, has to fight with them in order to kind of process them and get them through our system. And this leads to inflammation in the body,” Arthurs said. She recognized that many people may find it tough to stop eating ultra-processed foods altogether. Instead, she recommends limiting how much you eat. “It doesn’t mean you can’t have that ballpark hot dog,” Arthurs said, adding that cutting it in half and sharing it with someone was also an option. Other strategies Arthurs recommends to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods include: Eat a healthy meal before you head to an event, like a baseball game, where you know you’ll be exposed to a lot of ultra-processed foods. If you like sugary drinks, try alternating with ones that have little or no sugar. If you love snacking on chips, bring along an orange too, and eat the fruit before diving into the bag of chips. The findings, based on data from more than 6,800 U.S. adults, is being presented at the ACC’s Annual Scientific Session on March 28-30 in New Orleans. They’re also published in the journal JACC Advances. Get breaking news and daily headlines delivered to your email inbox by signing up here. © 2026 WTOP. All Rights Reserved. Hi everyone
I'm new here so my apologies in case I'm not doing this right. This is going to be a long one. I have a problem, a crisis actually, and I was hoping I could get some help here. So about 3 years ago I went off birth control pills (I was on them for 6 years) which destroyed my hormones. I started getting cystic acne like I'd never experienced before. The scars are still there and they're so bad that I've been getting laser treatment. It was horrific. I started missing my cycles. Extreme mood swings and uncontrollable weight gain. My hair fell out in clumps (still haven't recovered after 3 years). I looked for a solution. I already knew about Dr. Lustig's work on sugar but even cutting out sugar didn't help much. That's when I stumbled on Dr. Ken Berry's content. He talked about keto so that's what I tried and the results were ok but not enough to fix me. He also talked about carnivore so I tried it. It worked like magic. 3 months in and my acne was reduced and my weight started going down. I was on the lion diet for 2 years. Everything but my hair fall was fixed. Then something happened in my life that threw me off balance a bit and I had one bite of cake. One small bite and then all hell broke loose on me. In a matter of weeks I developed bulimia. Binging and purging. And one year later, right now, I've been trying to get back on carnivore without success. The binge continues but I had to stop the purge due to recurring blood in my vomit (pardon the graphic description), and fasting and exercise just make me binge even worse. I didn't have this problem before. I have severe meat aversion. I can't stand it even though before, it used to be my favorite food in the world. I've tried fasting, going cold turkey, keto to ketovore to carnivore, all without success. I'm at the end of my rope. I've put on 20 kg and my acne is coming back. Does anyone have a similar experience? Meat aversion is my main problem. I just can't stand red meat anymore or eggs or anything. I just want to get back on carnivore but I don't understand why I cannot. My apologies for the super long post and thank you for reading.
