Just curious on what your take on Spam (in a can) is?

Someone shared a picture of their breakfast over in the private PHD group, which consisted of 3 slices of fried spam and some eggs. I've never had spam, but have considered it. When I looked at the ingredients, I saw that it contained a little modified corn starch, likely as a binder. Does this bother anybody or is the amount simply trivial and not worth worrying about (much like the trace "sugar" in bacon)?

I consider Spam to be the "Meat of kings, that can be enjoyed by All". I eat Spam whenever I want to and really like the taste and texture. The few little traces of non meat ingredients do NOT bother me at all. Several different flavor varieties available also. Aldi sells their own house version of Spam which is pretty good also. Fried in a pan or smoked on the grill or even raw if you must, I find them all to be great. My wife is not a fan 🤣

monty python spam GIFI'm not a huge fan of spam. It's to cram into the pie hole when in a jam.

We bought a bunch during the academic, but I'm the only person in the house that will touch it. I eat a slice and throw the rest of the can out. Too salty. I prefer sardines or cod liver.

I used to love spam. Fried spam and eggs were a staple at deer camp growing up. A couple of cold slices on white bread was the norm while fishing.

I will avoid it these days. That little bit of sugar and corn starch may not be that bad in the whole grand scheme of things but it does add up over time. A little bit here and a little bit there and before long I’m counting carbs again and wondering why my hands are locking up.

But, as Dr. Berry says it’s still better than eating a bunch of carbs if that’s all you can afford or I would add on a road trip. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it if that’s all I had.

Spam has such a bad reputation and I do not understand why? It's just like hot dogs. So many people think they are junk foods when they are actually a very good source of nutrition and usually quite affordable.

If you can afford a better choice then definitely go that route, but in the end you won't be able to chart the difference between consuming spam/hot dogs VS ribeyes.

I bought a case of Vienna sausages and a case of spam from the little Mom/Pop grocery I part time at. Dated Oct 27. And figure if kept cool, would probably go alil further. Already got bout a half case of corned beef which I prefer over the spam. But hey, Spam might would beat the alternatives. .... I don't know if the Vienna sausages will make it till next year, much less 2027. As I have a soft spot for them.

Spam is nice to have for a quick meal, on occasion. You can keep it for a long time -in the cupboard, and it beats eating junk, or having to rely on keto bars when in need. I always keep a couple of cans around. As for the flavor, that cannot be argued over as my good mother used to say.

Spam Shelf Life Details:

  • Unopened:

Hormel states that Spam can last "indefinitely" if stored properly in a cool, dark, dry place, away from freezing temperatures, and off the floor. However, the flavor and quality may degrade after 5 years.

  • Opened:

Once opened, Spam should be refrigerated and consumed within 3 to 4 days for optimal quality and safety.

Now we know 😄

I'm not sure it is an amount to be concerned with the way it reads.

I had not thought about it years but it was a staple as a kid. Fried spam with eggs was almost a go-to. I have not had it in years.

The next trip into the grocery store I am going to venture up the 'can' aisle for the first time in a long time. LOL

Scott

It tastes the same as always, by which I mean "great" and it comes in several different flavors now. I still like the original one the best. good and salty! I have found SPAM to be a food that you either love it or hate it. I like to cut it into french fry sticks about 1/2" square, dip it in an egg wash, roll it in crushed pork rinds ands then fry it in tallow or bacon grease. Now there my friend you are talkin' Good Eats!

I'm pretty sure that was a fabricated joke picture, but you never know in this pumpkin spice world of the last few years or so. There is another picture of a figgy pudding can of spam on spam.com from 2022 that looks like it was real thing. I'd try it once just to say I did.

Who hurt the person that made this?

Side note, I had spam once in my life, it was okay. However, the one that gave it to me was my aunt who was considered a hardcore cheapstake. She would raise sand if you didnt do the whole "Turn the water off if you're not rinsing your body off" in the shower thing. Because of this, my family associated spam with like...'poor' food?

Maybe i'll find some recipes for it one day, it's apparently a delicacy in Hawaii. I'm thinking of slowly starting my carnivore/keto journey this week. Most of my diet composes of meat anyway, i just have to cut out all the other useless stuff
